Omeprazole affects Ca digestibility

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that is prescribed for horses suffering from gastric ulcers. This study assessed the effect of this therapeutic on the digestibility of diets containing limestone or marine-derived calcium. The study also assessed changes in parameters associated with gastric acid production and calcium status in Thoroughbred horses over a 3-week period. The digestibility of Ca was affected by Omeprazole and Ca source, but digestibility of minerals was not affected.
